Todd Vershaw

Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Vershaw joined the Company in March 1991 and has held various marketing roles and responsibilities, leading to his acquisition of the Company in August 2007. He also has served on the boards of St. Ambrose Business Advancement, Make-A-Wish, Niabi Zoo, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois Brokers and the John Deere Classic PGA Tournament. Mr. Vershaw received a B.A. in Business Management and Economics from St. Ambrose University. Mr. Vershaw and his wife Sharon reside in Long Grove, Iowa with their daughters Nicole and Anna.


Janson Bender

Vice President of Sales and Marketing

Mr. Bender joined Mutual Med in 2006 as a member of our Agent Services team, worked his way up to our Illinois Account Executive, and was most recently promoted to Vice President of Sales and Marketing. He has held an Illinois Insurance license since 2003, and brings with him a wealth of knowledge from his experience in the field where he started as an intern at Northwestern Mutual. He has a double major in Business Administration and Insurance from Illinois State University and resides in Sherrard, Illinois with his wife Stephanie and their three boys, Broderick, Brylan, and Braxton.


Rob Edel

Vice President of Finance and IT

Mr. Edel joined the Company in 2013 as Controller, was promoted to Finance Manager, and most recently was promoted to VP of Finance and IT. He currently serves on the board of Jordan’s Joy. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Edel spent 3 years at Republic Services in a Controller Development Program, where he held various positions in accounting, operations, sales/marketing, and market growth/development. Mr. Edel received a B.A. in Business Finance/Banking and Management from Waldorf College in 2010. He currently resides in Davenport, Iowa with his wife Miranda, their two daughters Raelynn and Audrey, and their yellow lab Wesley.


Phyllis Johnston

Director Operational Support

Ms. Johnston joined the Company in September 1990. Over the past 24 years, Ms. Johnston has held several managerial roles within the areas of processing small and large group new business, quoting, renewals, and customer service. She received an A.A. from Kirkwood Community College. She and husband David live in Blue Grass, Iowa and have two grown children, Dakota and Brittany.




Mutual Med’s friendly sales collaboration team and account executives inform insurance agents, our strategic partners, about Mutual Med’s full line of insurance products and services.
Each contracted agent is assigned an account executive and a marketing representative, who is their primary contact for product training, assistance with group enrollments, and more.
We provide agents with all the presentation materials, literature, forms and other sales tools they will need to succeed on a day-to-day basis. Our account executives can accompany agents to present proposals to clients, so they can explain the complexities of client coverage in easy-to-understand terms.
Whether our agents work with large groups, small groups or individuals, our skilled professionals can give them the guidance they need to sell to their clients as well as manage and retain their business.

Our Finance team is essential to the continued success of Mutual Med, and maintains oversight with regard to compliance and fiscal responsibility within the Mutual Med organization.
Our Finance professionals work closely with new agents, and coordinate with established agencies on behalf of the agent, to get them equipped and ready to achieve successful sales goals as soon as possible. Once our relationship with an agent is established, our friendly Finance personnel work with the agent to ensure that accurate commissions are paid to the agent in a timely and efficient manner.

For large groups, small groups and individual accounts, we help agents ensure applications are completed and submitted to appropriate carriers to achieve the best rate possible for their clients. When applications are submitted, we work directly with the carrier underwriters and sales teams to negotiate rates and process all paperwork to get the client established with new insurance coverage. The New Business Department saves considerable time for the agents, allowing them to sell more. Agents who have found paperwork and account placement time-consuming in the past, enjoy the freedom and convenience of having Mutual Med take care of such a wide array of details.

For large and small group accounts, we take the time to quote and compare/spreadsheet multiple carriers to give our agents all the information needed so they can help their client make the best possible decision. Whether that decision is renewing as is, making a plan change, or applying for coverage through another carrier, we help them through the entire process. If the carriers allow rate relief, we will work with those carriers to get the best possible renewal rate for the client. Our renewal staff is also there to help agents through the challenging and sometimes time-consuming process of carrier verification of participation audits. Our goal is to help the agent retain as much business as possible upon each renewal cycle.

As insurance brokers, we work directly with the agents who contract with us. We consider them our partners. Mutual Med's role is purely support-based. We interact with clients only as agents see fit. We are always here to answer your questions so let us know how we can help you. We answer agents questions and act as their 'back-room,' supplying them with all the applications, brochures and promotional materials they require. We work closely with our Marketing Department, to help our account executives meet the needs of the agents they work with. We also can provide lists of prospects to our agents for clients turning 65 in your area. When difficulties arise, agents come to us as their behind-the-scenes "fix-it" people. We provide agents more time to meet people and generate business. We’re here to make agents lives easier and more productive. Once an agent has a client on board with Mutual Med, we’ll take care of all their questions and concerns, and do whatever research is necessary to arrive at the right solution. Maintaining customer satisfaction for our agent partners and their clients is both our main objective and point of pride.
